‘‘Black Gold’ is a book work in two parts both housed in wooden boxes covered with gold metal leaf. The concertina book is digitally printed with text and images taken from old posters and documents related to the slave trade. The metal, possibly bronze, ring like object is a manilla. These were originally a traditional African exchange medium but became known as slave trade money after they were used by Europeans to acquire slaves. This manilla was one of thousands recovered from the Douro which was sailing from Liverpool, probably to Portugal, when she was wrecked off the Isles of Scilly in 1843. As this was 36 years after British ships were banned from the slave trade this suggests she was involved in illegal slaving or was carrying supplies for the banned trade.

Each box is 7 x 7 x 2 cms and the concertina book opens to about 175 cms. signed and dated on the bottom of one of the boxes.
